HISTORIC RENOVATION

Annapolis

In one of the oldest and most picturesque neighborhoods of Annapolis, Maryland, this house was renovated to become a showcase for the owner’s art collection.  The original brick house dates from 1858, designed in the Italianate style popular at the time.

In the renovation, the existing portions of the house were kept intact with much of the trim and paneling restored.  A large addition was designed to be inconspicuous from the street, allowing the original form of the house to remain evident.  The unique massing allowed the owner ample new space for the larger rooms needed for today’s lifestyle and still be set back somewhat from the street.

The addition includes an octagonal entry vestibule, a grand stair to the upper levels, a picture gallery, a family room, and a master bedroom suite. The original kitchen was enlarged and opened to the family room as well as connected to a sunny breakfast room and formal dining room that anchors the center of the original house. The lower level includes a wine cellar and tasting room, as well as a billiards room and a catering kitchen.
